Wordle Thursday

This week's Wordle was created from the text of the economic stimulus bill. I think it's appropriate. Does anyone ever read these whole bills? I can't believe how long the text is! I find it hard to believe that anyone voting on these bills would ever read the entire text. I can barely imagine some underling reading the whole thing and summarizing it.

Why was I not informed?

Apparently there are zombies on the loose in Austin. And not just any zombies, but Nazi zombies! The paper denies that there is any problem.

Probably, we should call this guy for help.

And perhaps pick up a copy of the Zombie Survival Guide just in case this zombie fighter is busy fending off another attack.

My First Award!

It's a busy Monday morning here. Lots and lots to do and catch up on at work. It's rainy and foggy which means I just want to read and drink coffee. Which I've stopped drinking, by the way, so I'm still not quite "with it" this morning. Darn caffeine.

Before I really dug in to get some serious work done, I hopped online just to check a couple things and I discovered that I have been awarded a sweet little blog award, the Lovey Award, by MJ. You should go check her out over at Note to Self. She's a riot!

I'm passing this warm-fuzzy award on to
Tulaloo
Silly Jilly
bobbinoggin
I love these three blogs and these three girls. You will not be disappointed if you visit them. Chances are there are some sweet photos of their children, some funny stories and some kind words.

And now, a word about the award: "These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind of bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers.Deliver this award to three bloggers who must choose three more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award."

Hello bloggy. I'm sorry I've been neglecting you this week. I wasn't feeling so well on my day off... darn cedar fever. And then classes started again on Tuesday. It's going to be a busy semester with copious amounts of reading and nearly as much writing. Good thing I like both! I'll try to blog more, bloggy, I promise.

Your Answer?

Fifty People, One Question: Brooklyn

If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow, where would it be?

What an interesting question. Where do you even begin, especially if you have traveled, have lived many places?

Filming the answers, on the spot, is a neat concept. It doesn't sound like a hard question at all. You could answer it without thinking. But, if you hesitate for a second and actually do think, the answers are limitless.

I've been thinking about it for 10 minutes and have decided that I'd like to wake up in Budapest, with Doug of course, with nothing but time to explore more of the city. What about you?

Today's Wordle is taken from a scene from Life of Brian. The hilarious stoning scene that I like to make Doug recite. It makes me laugh hysterically. I really need to watch this again!

Make your own vanilla extract

Last year I made vanilla extract kits as gifts for my mom and mother-in-law's birthdays. It's a fun, easy project and a gift that keeps giving, too.

Start with a clean glass jar. I reused Pom tea jars for these vanilla sets. You need 3 vanilla beans for each jar of extract you want to make. And you need some vodka!

Decorate the lids with paper, fabric, or whatever you have to cover the printing.

I used paper, so I then sprayed it with a couple coats of clear sealer spray so that the paper wouldn’t come off.

Print out the vanilla extract instructions and decorate them as tags. I used matching paper and ribbons for each set.

Cut each vanilla bean lengthwise in the center, stopping 1 inch from the top of the bean.

Put the beans in the jar and cover with vodka.

Voila! You've got a great gift for the bakers in your life.

If you plan on mailing this gift to someone, I suggest buying a small bottle of vodka to mail with it, unless you're sure that the lid on your vanilla container will seal tightly.

Vanilla Extract tag
Give the bottle a good shake every once in a while. Store in a dark, cool place for 2 months or longer.
Lasts for years. You can keep topping it off with vodka as you use the extract. Just remember to shake it up when you add more vodka.

Friendly Rejection

I got a friendly rejection email this morning at work after sending out a mass email to the members of the church where I work.

"Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail.---.edu.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out."

Further down, it lists the rejected email addresses and says,

"Sorry, no mailbox here by that name."

Who gets to come up with these responses? I think that would be a pretty fun job. You could change it seasonally, make it say smart ass things when you're having a bad day... really, the possibilities are endless.

Hmmm... How do I acquire the ability to change these messages? Clearly, this is a work power that I desperately need.

Off and running

We've decided to start running again. Today's the day.

I'm a pretty terrible runner. I imagine it's pretty funny to watch. Especially since Doug's legs are so long and he's so tall and I... well, I am not. I take little choppy steps which barely get me anywhere. My good old allergies have kicked in, too, so any attempts to mask my gasping for breath will most likely be thwarted by a ridiculous and constant need to blow my nose. But, I'm going to give it a shot again. Wish me luck.

At least I won't run into a horse.

Update: I didn't die. I actually ran a little bit better than I did 6 months ago. Go figure.

Conversations in our house

A conversation with my husband the other day after he noticed a push pin on the wall in his bathroom.

Hubby: "What's that pin in the wall for?"

Me: "What? It's been there for a month. I hung a Christmas decoration in there."

Hubby: "Dear Helen, Everything I have shown you is true. Sincerely, TV."

I swear it's true... we are like the Simpson's. I could be Marge and hubby is most certainly Homer.

A bit of a diversion

It's almost the weekend! Hopefully this will get you through the rest of the day...

It's back to work at the library today. I worked at the main branch last Saturday, but had the previous week and a half off while we were gone. My weekday has been switched to Thursdays and I think it will work out alright. Fridays are quiet at work so it won't matter so much that I'm tired. I'm excited to get back to work- I do love to go to the library!

My lesson for the day

The saying goes, "You learn something new every day."

I've been quite ambitious lately and thought I'd try my hand at making breakfast smoothies again. I figured I'd try getting as many fruits in there as possible. Maybe even some veggies, too. Might as well load it up, right?! This morning, for the first attempt, I tried a sweet potato smoothie with apple juice and applesauce.

Two servings of fruit? Check.
One serving of veggies? Check.
Disgusting texture that makes you want to puke? Check.

Today's lesson? Don't put veggies in smoothies.

Busy, busy, busy

What a busy Sunday! We popped out for a bit to hit Sam's for a few things, attempted to find pants at Men's Warehouse (no, hubby said he doesn't want brown pants, thanks) and then got groceries. And then it began...

brunch
football
dishes
baking bread
prepping fruit and veggies for the week
football
chicken in the crockpot
laundry
dinner
dishes
making soup
banana bread
cleaning the fridge
changed the sheets

I'm tired! But, glad that a lot of this stuff is finished for the week. That leaves me time to be crafty, watch the Fiesta Bowl tomorrow night and can tomatoes later in the week.

The countdown is on!

The second half of the final season of Battlestar Galactica premiers in 15 days. I am ridiculously excited! (Clearly... I'm blogging about it.) I've been re-watching the first half of the season so that I'm all caught up again and ready for the end.

Now, I just have to watch the webisodes and try to decipher the clues to figure out who the 5th cylon is. I still stand by my original prediction of Zac Adama. We'll see... hopefully sooner rather than later.

Happy New Year!
